Novotel Hotel - Dubai
Optimization of Duct Ventilation System

Modeling and analysis

From the CAD detail provided by the client a 3D model of the basement levels and ducts were modeled. From the initial data it was found that these ducts were provided only for exhausts and the fresh air was supplied naturally. From the initial analysis (from the client data) it was found that the CO concentration level was too high. The optimization of the duct ventilation was done to reduce the CO concentration level in the basements.

Conclusion

It was found that the present ventilation system in the basement levels would not meet the requirement of CO exposure limit set by the health and safety regulations. After optimization of these ducts, suggestions were given to the client for replacing the natural supply air system to mechanical system and replacing few exhaust ducts by supply air ducts so that the CO concentration levels would reduce considerably from 222 ppm (265.98mg/m3) to below 35PPM (42mg/m3) which is under the limits of health and safety regulations.

Objective

Novotel Hotel, Dubai uses duct ventilation system for their car parking basements. It was found that the system available was not efficient enough to evacuate the smoke and was far behind the human safety concerns. The main objective of this project was to optimize the duct ventilation system available in the car parking basements so that it could evacuate the smoke and the system could meet the requirements of CO exposure limit set by health and safety regulations.
